Represented in architectural concepts of reflection and void, this memorial explores the cultural, social, and humanitarian impacts that genocide imprints on the human condition. The charred and vacant cavity at the core of the memorial starkly contrasts against the polished and mirrored surfaces of the exterior. Upon approach and without consent, visitors become elements of the composition through their reflection. Entering the fire-hollowed core of the memorial, visitors lose their reflection becoming witness to the resultant void of genocide. The blackened timbers converge overhead and form a small oculus allowing a single beam of light to penetrate the darkness.
